Mario 2D is a BadWolfMC minigame that lovingly recreates levels from the original Super Mario Bros. inside Minecraft. Built as a side-scrolling platforming experience, Mario 2D combines faithful map recreation, custom mechanics, collectible rewards, and a healthy dose of nostalgia.

Originally introduced as an April Fool’s Day surprise in 2023, Mario 2D has since grown into an ongoing BadWolfMC tradition, with new worlds continuing to be added over time.

How to Play

Players can access Mario 2D from the large green pipe on the hill beside the Games Skull at /spawn.

Those who would rather watch than play can spectate through Lakitu’s camera, making it possible to enjoy the chaos from the sidelines while friends attempt their runs.

Gameplay Basics

Mario 2D is designed to evoke the feel of classic Super Mario Bros. while still functioning within Minecraft.

Players enter with their normal gear, though some functions are restricted to preserve the intended experience. In particular, shoot permissions are disabled while playing.

Instead of the traditional 3 lives, players begin each run with 5 hearts. Additional 1-Ups can also be found in each level, usually placed where Super Mushrooms would traditionally appear in the original game.

Rewards

At the end of each level, players can find loot chests containing a mix of traditional and Mario 2D-specific rewards.

Possible rewards include:

  • exclusive Mario 2D goodies
  • Loyalty Point Shards
  • Vault Loot
  • Fate Coins
  • diamonds and other familiar treasures

These rewards help make each run worthwhile, even for players returning to replay completed levels.

Current Levels

Mario 2D currently includes recreations of all levels through World 2-1.

Each level is painstakingly recreated from the original Super Mario Bros. maps, with special care given to preserving the look, flow, and challenge of the classic game inside Minecraft.

Included Worlds

  • World 1-1 (Overworld)
  • World 1-2 (Underground)
  • World 1-3 (Sky)
  • World 1-4 (Mini Boss)
  • World 2-1 (Overworld)

Because Mario 2D is an ongoing tradition, this list may continue to expand as new worlds are released.

Behind the Scenes

Although Mario 2D is designed to feel simple and familiar when played, the minigame relies on a number of custom mechanics and creative visual tricks behind the scenes.

Enemies

Many enemies are created using custom upside-down wither skeletons wearing upside-down heads. This technique allows creatures such as Goombas and Koopas to appear correctly within the side-scrolling format.

Blocks and Terrain

In places where blocks would traditionally be breakable in Super Mario Bros., Mario 2D uses fake blocks that can be jumped through. This helps recreate classic movement and interaction without requiring players to actually mine their way forward.

Faithful Recreation

Every level is carefully built to match the layouts of the original Super Mario Bros. maps as closely as possible. The goal is not merely to reference Mario, but to recreate the flow and structure of the original game in a way that feels instantly recognizable.

History

Mario 2D began as an April Fool’s Day feature on April 1, 2023.

What started as a playful seasonal surprise quickly became something more: a lovingly built minigame that captured both the charm of retro platforming and the creativity of BadWolfMC. Rather than remaining a one-off joke, Mario 2D became a recurring tradition, with additional levels and worlds added over time.

In later years, the release cadence shifted from April Fool’s Day to MAR10 Day, BadWolfMC’s way of celebrating Mario on March 10. This allowed the series to grow beyond its origins while still honoring the lighthearted spirit that inspired it in the first place.

Today, Mario 2D stands as both a tribute to a classic game and a continuing BadWolfMC tradition.
